About Regrowth Planning

Regrowth Planning is a land use planning firm committed to helping communities realize a vision that is both economically sound and environmentally sensitive.

Many people have the belief that economic prosperity has to come at the expense of natural resources, or that the preservation of natural resources has to come at the expense of economic prosperity. Regrowth Planning believes that an intertwined balance of these two forces ultimately results in the finest communities of all.

Successful communities often provide distinct areas for focused growth while protecting the surrounding natural resources and historic community character which make them an attractive place to live. The most successful communities intertwine these elements to provide beautiful open spaces and attractive community character into their economic development areas, resulting in an attractive community where people really desire to live, work and play. This is the balance which Regrowth Planning seeks to achieve.

About the Principal

Regrowth Planning was founded in 2020 by Michael B. Allen, AICP, who has been a practicing professional planner since 2003. In his prior work, Michael served as Senior Associate with Behan Planning and Design of Saratoga Springs, a firm he still actively collaborates with. Michael has over 19 years of planning experience working directly with municipalities and the public to revitalize their communities through the thoughtful design of comprehensive plans, zoning updates, form-based codes and design guidelines.

Everything we use in life is designed for us - our clothes, pens, coffee mugs, office, your house and car, the planes we fly in - everything is designed to look and function a certain way....except our towns and cities.
— Michael Allen, AICP

Since graduating from Syracuse University School of Architecture, Michael worked for a variety of noted architectural firms, including historic preservation-minded Badger & Associates in Manchester, VT.; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in London, and EYP Architecture and Engineering in Albany, NY.

Throughout his early career, Michael had been deeply concerned and disappointed in the way in our American cities and towns have been developing. While talented architects and developers were creating some visionary places, most developers and architects were creating uninhabitable and unpleasant spaces throughout the country. While everything in our life is designed to look and function a specific way, there were very few people designing the ‘big picture’ of how it all works together. As a result, our American towns and cities have been losing their once proud identity.

Frustrated with the inability to shape this larger landscape through the design of individual buildings, Michael switched his professional focus from architecture to town and city planning in 2003 with the goal of helping to improve the pattern of American growth.
